How to Promote Your Product

In a dynamic business landscape, how to promote your product is essential to reaching your target audience and driving sales. While numerous promotion methods are available, one strategy that has stood the test of time and continues to captivate audiences is billboard advertising.

This article will explore various ways to promote your product, with a special focus on the effectiveness of billboard marketing in Puerto Rico’s unique market.

How to Promote Your Product

How to Promote Your Product: Effective Ways to Advertise

When it comes to promoting your product, creativity is key. Here are some practical ways to get your product in front of potential customers:

Outdoor Advertising

Among the strategies that have weathered time’s test and continue to captivate audiences is the art of billboard marketing. The towering canvases strategically positioned in bustling locales form an unmissable visual feast, speaking volumes in an instant. In Puerto Rico’s vibrant market, this strategy wields even greater allure. The island’s dynamic lifestyle, characterized by constant movement and interaction, aligns seamlessly with the visual impact of billboards. With an ability to convey messages that linger, billboards offer a canvas for creativity to blossom, sparking conversations and cementing lasting brand impressions. This method stands as a testament to the enduring power of visuals in an age where digital bombardment often saturates attention spans.

bMedia Group’s offers different OOH advertising options to suits your budget.

Radio and Television Advertising

Radio and television have stood out for decades as great tools to promote products and services. Radio’s charm lies in its catchy jingles and tag lines that create memorable audio signatures, and by selecting the right station, you can precisely target your demographic.

Local or national television ads wield the visual narrative, making them especially effective for high-priced products.

However, TV and radio advertising come with their fair share of challenges. Notably, the high cost associated with producing and airing television commercials can strain marketing budgets, particularly for smaller businesses.

Social Media Marketing

In the digital age, social media platforms provide a way to connect with your audience. Utilizing engaging content, targeted advertisements, and influencer partnerships, a business can showcase its product to a wide range of potential customers. Nevertheless, it’s worth being aware of possible over-saturation in a crowded online space, which might impact the visibility of your product.

Public Speaking Events

Engaging in public speaking events can serve as a potent advertising method, particularly if your product aligns with your expertise. Consider extending your services to relevant organizations that could gain from your workshops or talks. Distributing business cards and promotional materials during the event encourages participants to spread the word about what you have to offer.

Worrying that your business is too small to stand out? Anyone can advertise on a billboard! Contact bMedia Group to discuss your ideas.

What Methods of Promotion Can You Use?

What Methods of Promotion Can You Use?

To create a well-rounded promotional strategy, consider these five methods:

  • Advertising: Paid advertisements on various platforms, including online banners and billboards, can help you gain exposure to a broader audience.
  • Sales Promotion: Offering discounts, coupons, or limited-time offers can incentivize potential customers to make a purchase.
  • Public Relations: Building a positive image for your brand through media coverage, press releases, and public events can enhance your credibility.
  • Direct Marketing: Engaging directly with potential customers through techniques like cold calling, direct mail, and personalized messages can yield valuable results.
  • Personal Selling: In industries where relationships matter, having skilled sales representatives who can communicate the value of your product to potential customers is essential.

What Is an Example of Promoting a Product Successfully?

One notable example of successful product promotion comes from the tech giant Apple. With each product release, Apple creates anticipation through presentations, product demonstrations, and teaser campaigns.

This strategy builds excitement among their customer base, encouraging them to line up outside stores and pre-order products well in advance.

Promoting Sales Effectively

To promote sales effectively, consider these tips:

  1. Limited-Time Offers: Create a sense of urgency by offering discounts or deals for a limited period. This encourages customers to make a purchase quickly.
  2. Bundling Products: Package related products together at a slightly lower price than purchasing them separately. This strategy can increase the average transaction value.
  3. Loyalty Programs: Reward your loyal customers with exclusive discounts, early access to new products, or other perks that keep them engaged with your brand.

Are Billboards Effective?

Billboard advertising can yield impressive results. With its ability to reach a large and diverse audience, billboards provide a visual and memorable way to promote your product. In Puerto Rico, where the culture is vibrant and diverse, billboard advertising can be tailored to resonate with the local population.

Billboards come in two formats:

  1. Static billboards feature eye-catching visuals and concise messaging, leaving a lasting impression on passersby.
  2. Digital billboards, offer dynamic content that can rotate between various advertisements, allowing for greater flexibility and real-time updates to capture the audience’s attention in a rapidly changing environment.

Harnessing the Power of Billboard Advertising in Puerto Rico

So, how do you advertise your product on a billboard in Puerto Rico? First, identify the most strategic locations for your target audience. Whether it’s a bustling city center, a popular tourist spot, or a major highway, understanding where your potential customers spend their time is crucial.

bMedia Group understands the market dynamics in Puerto Rico and can provide accurate cost estimates for your product advertisement needs.

Cost Considerations

The cost of putting your product on a billboard can vary widely based on factors such as location, size, and duration. In Puerto Rico, rates may differ from those in other markets due to the island’s unique nature.

Effectiveness of Billboard Marketing

The effectiveness of billboard marketing is particularly pronounced in Puerto Rico’s unique market. This captivating strategy has demonstrated its ability to engage audiences effectively, making it a standout choice for businesses aiming to promote their products.

The dynamic lifestyle of Puerto Ricans and the frequent movement of people on the island means that billboards can reach a diverse and extensive audience daily. Unlike other forms of advertising that require individuals to seek out information actively, billboards are a passive yet impactful medium. They weave seamlessly into people’s daily routines, capturing attention during commutes, leisurely drives, or walks around the town.

However, more than just the sheer visibility makes billboards effective. The visual nature of billboards provides ample space for creativity and storytelling. The combination of concise messaging, striking visuals, and strategic placement creates a trifecta of engagement that is difficult to achieve through other mediums.

The quick but impactful interaction with the billboard can spark curiosity and prompt individuals to seek more information about the product or event.

For instance, a study by the Outdoor Advertising Association of America found that billboards are particularly effective in boosting online engagement. This means that individuals who see a billboard are more likely to search for the advertised product online, visit the company’s website, or engage with their social media profiles. This seamless transition from offline to online engagement showcases the interconnectedness of different advertising channels.

In Puerto Rico, where the vibrant culture and close-knit communities play a significant role, billboards can also serve as conversation starters. People often share their thoughts and experiences with their peers, and a thought-provoking or visually captivating billboard can spark discussions. This ripple effect expands the reach of your message beyond the immediate viewers and into the community’s social fabric.

The effectiveness of billboards cannot be overstated. Billboards are a powerful and essential tool for businesses looking to promote their products.

A well-designed billboard can instantly convey your brand’s message, leaving a lasting impression on passersby.

Understanding Billboard Advertising

Billboard advertising is a form of outdoor advertising that provides large-scale promotions usually along highways, busy streets, and other prominent locations. This visibility makes them an excellent way to get your brand noticed.

Here’s why:

  • High Exposure: Billboards are seen by thousands of people every day, offering unrivaled reach.
  • Cost-Effective: When calculated per impression, billboards can be more cost-effective than other forms of advertising.
  • Brand Awareness: They’re ideal for boosting brand visibility and building brand identity.

Crafting Your Billboard Marketing Strategy

Crafting an effective billboard marketing strategy involves careful planning, creativity, and understanding of your target audience.

Here are some key steps to follow:

Define Your Goals

First, define what you want to achieve with your billboard advertising. Your goal could be increasing brand awareness, promoting a new product or service, or reaching a new audience segment.

Identify Your Audience

Understanding who your target audience is will dictate where you should place your billboards for maximum visibility. Consider demographics like age, occupation, income level, and interests.

Design Your Message

Less is more when it comes to billboard design. The average viewing time is about 5-10 seconds, so keep your message short, compelling, and easy to understand. Need some inspiration with your overall design? Here are some best practices.

Choose Your Locations

Location is critical in billboard advertising. Pick high-traffic areas where your target audience frequently passes by. For maximum exposure in Puerto Rico, bMedia Group offers a wide range of prime locations.

Set a Budget

The cost of billboard advertising can vary based on the size, location, and duration of the ad. Define your budget in advance and consult with your outdoor media provider to find options that suit your financial plan.

Integrating Billboard Advertising Into Your Marketing Strategy

Billboard advertising should not stand alone but rather be integrated into your overall marketing strategy.

Here’s how you can achieve that:

  • Consistency is Key: Your billboards should reflect the same message and branding as your other marketing channels.
  • Drive Online Engagement: Use your billboard to drive traffic to your website or social media platforms. This could be through a call-to-action, a scannable QR code, or mentioning a hashtag.
  • Track Your Performance: Utilize tracking methods, like unique URLs or promotional codes, to measure the success of your billboard campaigns.

Billboard Advertising with bMedia

In today’s fast-paced digital world, the value of physical advertising channels like billboards can be overlooked. However, a well-executed billboard marketing strategy can deliver significant value to businesses. Whether you’re a local business in Puerto Rico or a multinational corporation, bMedia Group offers the experience and coverage to help your brand make a lasting impression.

Increase Brand Awareness

According to Forbes, most people are exposed to between 4,000 and 10,000 ads per day; there is a challenge for companies to cut through all the noise and make an impact on advertising. Today’s business environment is overrun by competition; you need to differentiate yourself from everyone else. Your product needs to stand out, and increase brand awareness is one of the best ways to do it. This is one of the most powerful advertising mediums for instant recognition and trust among your customers.

Companies can harness the power behind brand advertising platforms such as Out of Home Advertising – OOH to build brand recognition and awareness and expand the market.

Increase Brand Awareness

What is OOH Advertising?

As the name suggests, Out of Home advertising or OOH is an advertising mode found outside the consumer’s home. Companies like bMedia group are leveraging this platform to give businesses a fighting chance.

OOH is inclusive of everything; benches, bus shelters, and billboards. If you can see an ad outside your home, and it’s not on your mobile phone, you are most likely looking at some form of OOH.

Because people spend a lot of time outdoors, the growth of digital advertising has made it hard to get your message heard quickly. OOH provides a solution that combines both digital advancements and traditional advertising, a powerful tool for marketers and advertisers.

Out of Home Advertising Incredible Statistics

Here are some incredible statistics about billboards you probably did not know:

  • In 2018, advertising through OOH was the only traditional tool that showed growth. More than $8 billion was used in OOH ads, growing quarterly.
  • Over 80% of billboard viewers look at the message, and almost half look at the images.
  • Three-quarters of people have noticed the ads on digital billboards, subway, static billboards, newspaper stands, and taxi cabs.
  • Over 69% of all billboard viewers have made purchasing decisions due to OOH ads.

In this regard, it goes to show that incorporating OOH ads in your marketing for brands plan can do the following:

Build and Maintain Your Brand Awareness

OOH provides the perfect opportunity to instant increase brand awareness, popularity, and elevate its credibility. These strong carryover effects ensure that your awareness strengthens over time.

The larger-than-life images, strong branding awareness, and excellent visibility causes your company to stand out in this cluttered digital space. This is not a competition with other forms of media but a way to cut through the plethora of adverts.

Digital billboards will go a long way in promoting your brand and ensuring your name is on the lips of your potential clientele.

Reach a Massive Audience

OOH provides the most continuous brand popularity and presence of all advertising modes. It informs, stimulates, and entertains one’s senses 24 hours a day. In addition, the ad reach is a much larger audience that includes people who are not constantly on social media.

It also reaches an audience that’s hard to find and engage with, such as people who are cost-prohibitive and light TV viewers. With the many different types of media becoming increasingly fragmented, advertisers need to expand, and OOH targets a very broad demographic.

Sustain Awareness

OOH can maintain your brand’s awareness over time. Therefore, it is more significant and sustainable than other advertising mediums such as television. This is because its continuous presence reaches an audience that other media outlets cannot reach.

The high frequency is also a fundamental strength of OOH. The repeated exposure will ensure that your brand is forever remembered by those who view it.

Out of Home Advertising Incredible Statistics

How Do You Measure The Effectiveness of OOH?

Puerto Ricans are greatly deluged with visual stimulation, and it is estimated that, on average, they can actively view as many billboards as possible. So, naturally, this registers strongly in their minds.

However, for a billboard to be effective and truly stand out from the competition, it must have a captive audience, such as people on a bike, walking, running, or driving. This ensures they cannot ignore the billboard.

Measuring the effectiveness of a billboard is important for every campaign. Therefore, the billboard company, such as bMedia group should provide you with specific data and statistics as pertains to:

The Location

OOH is a unique way of advertising that’s not dynamic. With the internet, ads can change within a short time span. Still, billboards change less often and sometimes offer the most effective ad strategy.

Measuring their effectiveness starts with evaluating the location of their placement. The points to consider include the following:

  • The number of vehicles or people that are passing by the billboard daily.
  • The number of people and cars that see the billboard per day.
  • The number of vehicles or people that interacted with the billboard per day.

How To Measure The Traffic Effectiveness of a Billboard

To measure its effectiveness, it is essential to know the exact amount of traffic surrounding the billboard’s location.

The first thing is to try and find the perfect and most ideal location with a lot of traffic. However, you should know that such areas are usually higher priced than areas with lower traffic. Still, with the amount of business your company will likely receive, this is more than worth it.

Measurement of the traffic is done through many different methods, including using government data, road traffic counts, manually logging in the daily data, and road traffic counts.

The numbers will help determine the ideal location for placing your billboard.

How To Measure The Traffic Effectiveness of a Billboard

Analytics

Suppose you have a slogan, catchphrase, or brand name unique to your business. In that case, you can use Google Analytics data to scrape methods that can be used to analyze how often those specific words and phrases are typed into search engines.

This is similar to executing keyword search for SEO and helps you understand how you can measure the billboard’s effectiveness. The more search hits your brand name has, the higher the number of people viewing your billboard and taking action.

Hashtags

Hashtags have been used widely to provide enough opportunities to get customers on board for a specific message. In addition, you can utilize hashtags to better evaluate the effectiveness of your billboard ad. The number of people responding and commenting on the hashtag is a great measurement.

Sales Analytics

There is a direct relationship between the number of sales and outdoor ads. The higher the sales figure you receive after placing a billboard ad, the more effective the billboard. Essentially the billboard should bring in more customers, which increases sales. If this does not happen, then it is not effective.

Restaurant Billboard Ideas

No matter what industry you are in, you certainly know the importance of marketing and advertising. Effective advertising can help you stand out from the competition. There is perhaps no industry where this is more important than in the restaurant industry. With quite literally millions of options to choose from, people will be drawn to restaurants with good advertising. Thus, it’s crucial that your restaurant’s advertising stands out. Need some restaurant billboard ideas and tips? We’re here to help!

The most effective and successful restaurant billboards contain striking images, plays on words and humor, or details that make onlookers do a double-take. With a clever and out-of-the-box billboard design, people are sure to take notice and flock to your restaurant. Here are some of our favorite designs to help generate some restaurant billboard ideas.

Restaurant Billboard Ideas and Tips

While there are many different directions you can take your restaurant billboard design in, there are some standard guidelines you should follow. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Using contrasting colors and elements
  • Highlighting a new product/dish
  • Play with angles and perspectives for a clever touch
  • Partner with local and seasonal events
  • Experiment with sizing
  • Get creative with fonts

With this in mind, here are some great examples of effective restaurant billboards that have done some of these things.

Compare and Contrast

restaurant billboard ideas

As part of an intricate advertising campaign from Outfront Studios, Baskin Robbins created billboards, posters, and even web landing pages with the theme of: “some things go better together.” The agency created a fictitious company called Bobo’s Fish Juice that featured some eyebrow-raising flavor combinations. These faux-healthy advertisements were then placed side by side with delicious images of Baskin Robbins shakes.

Though Baskin Robbins is not known to be a healthy choice, the advertising campaign managed to make healthy ingredients look less desirable using an artful compare and contrast. Color schemes, images, and even tone are subtle ways to compare and contrast products to highlight your restaurant. As seen in this example, conceptual contrast and color contrast can work together in a very effective way.

Highlight a Product

how to design a restaurant billboard

McDonald’s created an ambitious campaign to promote the quality and freshness of its salads. The hamburger chain planted thousands of heads of lettuce on a billboard made of soil. Over three weeks, the bare billboard sprouted full blooms of fresh green lettuce spelling out “FRESH SALADS.” The innovative advertisement boosted sales by 30%, and 500,000 salads were sold during the campaign period.

McDonald’s also ran similar campaigns with a carrot bus stop advertisement and a giant hatching egg outside another store location. This was a great example of creating hype around a specific dish or ingredient by highlighting it.

One great thing about the restaurant industry is that you have a universally-appealing product to advertise to people: food. High-quality food photography can make all the difference with your restaurant’s out-of-home advertising. Imagine you are driving home from work and can’t wait to eat. If you see a huge billboard depicting a delicious-looking pizza, you’ll be much more inclined to read where that pizza comes from and go and purchase it.

Play with Perspectives

restaurant billboard design ideas

This restaurant billboard idea for a seafood restaurant caught a lot of eyes. The actual advertisement is comprised of two parts: The billboard in the background, and the plastic fish emerging from the top of the actual restaurant building. From this angle, both elements of the advertisement look like they are all one piece. However, the billboard is a few yards away behind the building that the fish rests on.

This billboard uses perspective and optical illusion to make the fisherman on the billboard look like he’s reeling in an extremely large fish. This is an interesting way to capture and keep the attention of viewers, as the fish and fisherman will appear to move depending on where the viewer approaches from.

Partner with Local Events

restaurant ooh advertising

This upscale restaurant in downtown Toronto participated in the annual Winterlicious event by offering a special prix fixe meal. Though many restaurants in the area participate in the event, Far Niente took it one step further. The concept art is simple, depicting salt, flour, and cheese being sprinkled against a black space. However, the simple images use restaurant ingredients to invoke the image of snow falling on a winter’s night. This ties directly into the event it is participating in.

This ad run shows us a creative way to incorporate local events in restaurant advertisements, and how seasonal advertisement can be impactful. Seasonal advertising is quite effective with billboard advertising, as you can keep a seasonal billboard up for short or long periods of time, depending on the time of year you’re appealing to. Plus, you can run similar campaigns while appealing to different seasons, and your audience will be excited to see what you’ve come up with next.

An Excellent Use of Cutouts

what should i put on a restaurant billboard

MidiCi pizza used a three-dimensional cutout to make the shape of an otherwise typical billboard irregular and eye-catching. The plate seems to hang off of the billboard. Furthermore, the bold green and red tones of the pizza advertised pop against the otherwise pristine white plate and background.

The use of three-dimensional cutouts and color is an easy way to showcase specific products or dishes on your restaurant billboards. Playing with sizing, including making certain elements of your billboard larger than the others, or playing with shapes as this one does, is a great way to make your billboard stand out from the rest.

Contrasting Text

restaurant billboard how to

Chipotle ran this billboard advertisement that also invites another look. Onlookers immediately see the target message in bold black text: our ingredients are better. However, a second look reveals another message about locally sourced natural ingredients, and even includes a dose of humor.

This artful use of contrast text and a message-within-a-message is deceptively simple, but Chipotle has accomplished not one but two important marketing messages about its ingredients in just a few seconds. Consider playing with bold contrast to deliver two messages for the price of one in your own restaurant billboard.

Why Advertise with Billboards?

Before we take you through our tried and true billboard design tips, you’re probably wondering if billboards and other OOH advertising mediums are still worth it. In this age, practically everyone is glued to their smartphone, tv, or laptop 24/7. Does this mean that online ads are the best?

There are a few different reasons why billboards, and outdoor advertising in general, are still an effective advertising medium in 2021.

Outdoor advertising is more noticeable.

Online advertising can be frustrating since so many consumers have ad-blockers in place. Those that don’t are bombarded with so many ads that none really stand out. However, billboard ads don’t have these problems, as they’re basically unblockable.

Outdoor advertising is more accepted by consumers.

Consumers are generally pretty wary of social media ads, especially after educating themselves on the manipulative tricks that many online advertisers use on them. Billboards, on the other hand, are a long-standing accepted form of advertising that isn’t subject to any ethical issues, like social media and other online ads can be.

Outdoor advertising can benefit other advertising campaigns.

People tend to be more perceptive of their surroundings outside of the home. They can take in your advertisements, even if they’re not consciously aware of it. This effect can boost your other advertising campaigns.

According to research from Ocean Neuroscience, consumers were 48% more likely to engage with a mobile ad when exposed to the same out-of-home advertisement first.

Billboards help with brand building and recall.

Outdoor advertising has shown to be very effective in building brand awareness and brand image. Researchers think that this has to do with the fact that people tend to be more perceptive of their surroundings outside of the home.

This type of advertising can be very cost-effective.

Another key advantage of outdoor advertising, especially for companies with limited marketing budgets, is its cost-effectiveness. In the current marketing environment, outdoor advertising is often cheaper than print or digital advertising. Additionally, outdoor advertising is more long-term than print or digital ads, which often require repeated payments to carry out campaigns. Paying to have an advertisement on a billboard for a month can be a much better use of funds than repeatedly paying for a commercial campaign.

Billboard Design Best Practices

With our decades of experience at bMedia, we’ve compiled a list of billboard design best practices that hold true across all businesses and industries. Note how all of our billboard design tips allow for a lot of flexibility, which is critical to enabling your brand to share its own unique vision.

1. Keep it simple.

Use fewer than 7 words and fewer than 3 visual elements. Billboards are made to be quick bursts of essential information. Making it more complicated than above will dilute the message your brand is trying to send.

2. Use borders and cropping properly.

Making an object larger than life will turn heads. Leverage size, cropping, and borders to help make your billboard eye-catching.

3. Be intentional with colors and contrast.

Bright colors and sharp contrasts make for an easily digestible billboard that’s also eye-catching.

4. Leverage key locations and seasons.

You wouldn’t want to advertise your new holiday line of sweaters in the middle of April. At the same time, you also want to make sure the location of your advertisement matches your target demographic. You’ll want to advertise in different places if you sell luxury goods vs if you sell more affordable, discounted goods. Ensure that you’re getting the right information to the right people at the right time.

5. Be careful with fonts.

The most critical part of proper use of fonts is to ensure your billboard is readable from various distances. You don’t want your font size too big or too small, and you definitely want to stick to simple, easily discernible fonts. Don’t overly condense text, unevenly weight fonts, or make the font too thick or thin! Simplicity and readability are key.

Examples of Effective Billboards

As you may have picked up by now, there’s no one-size-fits-all billboard design. Even when following our billboard design tips, you will see that there’s plenty of room to be creative and unique. As such, there are many different examples of effective billboards that can turn heads and attract customers.

One company that’s done a great job with its billboard advertising is Apple. Even though it’s one of the world’s leading technology companies, Apple frequently uses billboards and other traditional forms of advertising. In 2015, Apple launched its “Shot on iPhone” campaign. The campaign offered iPhone users the opportunity to capture images on their phones that would then be used on billboards, commercials, and other ads. Apple’s Shot on iPhone campaign displays the importance of engaging consumers and being thoughtful with image selection. These billboards were remarkably simple, yet remarkably effective.

Another fantastic billboard example was a Formula Toothpaste billboard in Indonesia. This remarkably creative advertisement shows a man whose teeth are so strong that he is literally ripping the billboard off of its supporting structure. This billboard is a wonderful example of using creativity to stand out. Once again, it’s a clean, simple image that effectively communicates Formula’s product and value while simultaneously being creative.

Successful Billboards Around The World

Billboards have long been a staple of the marketing and advertising space. In fact, they are probably one of the first things that come to mind when thinking about traditional advertising. However, in today’s world, one is confronted with advertising at almost every turn. So the question becomes: how do you stand out? Here, we will discuss some tips on how to create successful billboards, as well as giving some examples from around the world.

Not all billboards are created equal.

The market and the audience of certain billboards must be taken into careful consideration in order to maximize their effectiveness. Because of this, billboards around the world are designed in different ways and seek to capture different audiences.

Tips for Successful Billboards

The process of creating successful billboards takes time, creativity, and ingenuity. However, when executed well, they can be remarkably effective and result in a high return on investment (ROI). Below are some tips for creating successful billboards.

Keep It Simple

You might feel the need to add as much information as possible onto your billboard. However, you must remember that most people are only glancing at a billboard in passing. Therefore, it’s important that you get straight to the point. Bold colors, readable text, and eye-catching images will help capture your audience’s attention. Additionally, remember to keep your message clear and concise. It can certainly be clever, but your audience does not have that much time to pause and figure out what you’re trying to convey.

successful billboard campaigns

Your Audience Is #1

When designing successful billboards, it’s crucial that you keep in mind who your audience is. Advertisers must meet the audience where they already are. So, if you’re advertising your tractors, why not place a billboard out in the country? If you’re promoting a new rideshare app, why not place the billboard in an urban center, where there is a need for the service? Keeping your audience at the forefront of your mind will help you optimize the success of your billboard and lead to the best ROI.

Go Digital

Digital billboards are popping up all over the place, even in places where you’d least expect them. While digital billboards may be a bit more expensive than traditional static billboards, they can actually result in a higher ROI. This is because digital billboards can be used on a rotating basis. One company can advertise on the digital billboard in the morning, while you can advertise on the same billboard in the evening, based on the audience you’re trying to reach. Because of this, you can optimize your investment and reach the people you want to reach, only when you know they’ll be there.

Other Things to Keep in Mind

A few other things that are important to keep in mind when designing your successful billboard include:

  • Location
  • Daily traffic
  • Type of traffic (car vs. foot)
  • Budget
  • Duration of campaign
  • Timeliness

Examples of Successful Billboards

Now that we’ve discussed some tips for creating successful billboards, we’ll share some examples from around the world.

Asia

successful billboards

Billboard: Mt. Fuji’s Litter

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this billboard is that it technically isn’t a billboard. Sure, it has the frame and structure of a successful billboard – but it’s missing the actual content of a billboard. Of course, the position and intended viewing angle of the board attempt to turn Mt. Fuji into the content. Given the cultural significance and sheer recognition of Mt. Fuji to its target audience, the effect is substantial. The litter framing the famed natural spectacle leaves a stunning impression about the impact that litter has on natural areas.

Billboard: Skype Qik Live

Mobile devices and social media are huge in Asia. Whether it be a mobile game, the hottest new trending app, or just chatting with friends, the smartphone is a gateway into a world of almost endless entertainment. This company created a billboard that allows mall-goers to record themselves on a nearby mobile phone installation. Then, their clip appears on the ad. This interactive billboard makes physical advertising media relevant to the many enthusiastic smartphone users in Manila.

Europe

How many times have you or a friend lost hold of your smartphone, only to pick it up and discover that the screen has shattered? This universally disappointing image of a shattered phone is certainly eye-catching. By replicating this effect on this billboard, it catches the viewer’s attention and reminds them of their broken phone screen.

This one is interesting as the viewer has to see this billboard multiple times at different points in the day to get the full effect. Basically, the awning on top of this billboard is supposed to cast a shadow. The shadow will change depending on the sun’s relation to the billboard. As the sun moves throughout the day the shadow will change in accordance, making it seem as if the water line on the board is moving upwards. Given that Denmark exists next to the Atlantic, rising ocean levels actually do affect them as they change the shoreline of the country. This is an example of a successful billboard that uses repeated exposure to leave an impact.

Billboard: Adam Ruins Everything

Anyone who has spent long enough time on Facebook has probably seen a video snippet of Adam Ruins Everything, a series dedicated to dispelling half-truths and common misconceptions. While one can imagine that such an “in your face” ad might not be incredibly popular with all Americans, there’s no doubt that it’s effective in attracting the attention of its home audience. Not only does it call attention to a fact that Americans may not like to think about, but it also works as a form of passive activism. It forces passersby to reassess the value that they’ve placed on such a monument.

Billboards: Total Recovered campaign

During the COVID-19 pandemic, plenty of ads sprung up reminding people to stay at home and wear masks. However, there was not that much positive advertising. An advertising agency called Orb decided to create a campaign highlighting the total number of people that had recovered from COVID-19. This campaign acted as a beacon of hope, while most other COVID-related advertising was rather bleak.

Billboard: Clean Air

The city of Lima located in Peru was estimated to have the highest pollution levels in all of South America back in 2012. This billboard was created in response. This billboard actually takes the surrounding polluted air and purifies it, emitting fresh air back out. As one can imagine, it was incredibly well-received by its target audience due to the fact that it actively improved their lives.

Billboard: Amphibious billboards

Who said billboards need to be roadside? These amphibious billboards can be found either on the beachside or out in the water themselves. Given that South America is known for its fair share of beautiful beaches, it only makes sense to play up to the region’s natural strengths and advertise in popular beach spots.

Billboard: Porsche Ads

If you have enough money and the inclination to buy a Porsche, you probably feel good about the purchase and enjoy it when other people notice your car. The Porsche company itself understands this and put up an ad in Melbourne that can tell when a Porsche is approaching. The ad calls out Porsche drivers and compliments them on their car, making them feel good and adding a little bit of additional value to their purchase.

Billboard: SEEK Job Site – Cannon Safety Inspector

Finding the right person for the job can be tough, especially when the person you need has to have an incredibly specific and obscure skillset. This billboard put up in Perth might not be the fanciest, but is still entertaining and effective. The imagery gives off sentiment that would feel at home in a “Monty Python” skit, appealing to the sensibilities and humor of Australians.

Clever Billboards

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, but what about action? It is one thing to say you are capable of doing something, but an entirely different thing to actually demonstrate it. This logic governs the concept of resumes and portfolios in the working world. Unlike day-to-day life, billboard advertising usually relies more on telling than showing due to the restrictions imposed upon by the medium. Clever billboards are catching the attention of passersby, as well as curious insects.

Enter Publicis and their innovative, clever billboard for the insecticide company, Orphea, which has found a creative way of getting around the limitations of physical ads.

Orphea Billboard Bug Killer

Location, Location, Location

First, in order to add a little bit more context to this ad, we must understand its location. While easy to overlook if one isn’t careful, the location of an ad is crucial to reaching your target audience. This very same billboard would not be nearly as effective in say, Antarctica, for instance. Even though it is not present for long, the video does a good job of establishing the climate and conditions of Milan, Italy, with a shot of a nearby cloud of bugs. This communicates the idea that to the locals insects are a constant and troublesome issue during the spring.

Even though most everyone can relate to bugs being annoying, the location for this specific ad caters to an audience with a real and prevalent need.

Orphea Insecticide Billboard

Idea Through Action

In order for Orphea to sell their bug spray they must convey to their audience, “our insecticide is effective at killing insects.” If one were to just look at the original graphics of the billboard though, only the name of the company and the product are displayed. The billboard informs the consumer that the product exists but ultimately fails to get across how effective said product is. Technically, this would mean that a violation of the basic guidelines has occurred.

“Rules are what the artist breaks; the memorable never emerged from a formula” – Bill Bernbach

Compare the live performance of a speech versus the transcription of said speech. Elements such as body language and eye contact are lost when only one form of presentation is utilized. In order to fully analyze the strategy of this campaign, one must look past any individual medium of information and must take in the piece as a whole. In this case, the ad uses action instead of using static images and text to convey the efficacy of the product. This ad doesn’t need to say anything because it directly shows the purpose and result of the product. This creates a wordless and automatic association of action and product within the minds of the audience.

Clever Billboards

Things normally become less interesting the more we experience them. Even someone’s favorite song runs the risk of becoming dull if heard often enough. Billboards are much the same way. A creative and unique billboard might grab your attention the first time, but what if you had to drive past that same billboard on your way to work every day for a month? The novelty wears thin eventually.

The temporal aspect of this ad makes it even more effective over time, however. The true nature of this ad isn’t stuck at any one point in time. From the original posting to the final result, none of these are really the “completed” ad. The billboard continues to change and grow in an organic way which adds something new for the consumer every time they may pass it. If this was a part of someone’s morning commute, tracking the progress of the ad would no doubt become a staple of their morning routine while it was around. Simply said, the most clever billboards stand out.

This keeps the ad, and likewise the product, at the forefront of the consumer’s mind. If one secures that very precious spot in the consciousness of the consumer, it becomes much more likely that they will be remembered when a purchasing decision is about to be made.

Billboard Design Tips

Technology is boosting marketing practices in amazing ways, but outdoor advertising is remaining as strong as ever. From design to development, creating a successful billboard is slightly more complicated than just drawing the idea on a napkin and getting it made.

It requires a lot of planning, a lot of measuring, and sometimes a lot of tweaking. However, with these billboard design tips, you’ll save budget on design, even if you don’t end up designing the billboard in-house.

Billboard ideas can stem from a variety of factors and inspiration. With a few billboard design tips, you’ll start thinking about the larger picture – not just what’s on the billboard.

Where Do I Start With Billboard Design?

billboard ideas

Designing a billboard can be intimidating, especially if you don’t can’t envision what it’ll look like or what it’ll say. How can a designer know what to design if you don’t know what to tell the designer? Start with these main billboard design tips before you even start creating the design.

Every design starts with these main steps:

Step 1. Define the Goals

As with any marketing strategy, don’t just make a billboard for the sake of doing it. You need to decide what you want to get out of your campaign, and then you’ll be able to think of the ideas that will accomplish that. Some billboards advertise a promotion, others announce a new product, and many simply remind consumers of your brand. The respective goal for each of those could be to get customers into the store soon, educate them that there’s a new product available, or just make sure your company is fresh in their mind next time they need to make a buying decision.

Step 2. Market Analysis

Great billboard ideas often start with research and analysis. One of the key aspects of creating a billboard is location. For example, a busy road into an urban center will be seen by many commuters, and one at the entrance to a shopping center will carry a message to customers about to spend money. You can get quite detailed information about how many people will pass by your sign on a daily basis, and thinking about the area where they’re going will help you determine their demographics.

Step 3. Define the Target

Coming up with the appropriate target group is quite similar to setting the goals of the billboard. Outdoor advertising will usually be seen by a variety of people from different backgrounds in various demographic groups, but it’s a good idea to target it to someone more specific. People in a different age group or income level generally have different interests, and speaking successfully to one group is a much better idea than falling short of all of them.

billboard for the Chevy Malibu used software recognition to identify drivers of similar cars and tell them why this one is better. This is an extreme example, but it shows how the creators were only targeting groups that were interested in certain vehicles.

Step 4. Have a Clear Message

Once you know the goal, target, and location of the billboard, you need to figure out the exact message you want to say. Billboards generally need to be simple and straightforward, so trying to get more than one message across usually won’t work. Don’t tell your customers that your store now has a new brand of shirts and that children’s clothes are on sale. Pick only one, and stick to it – otherwise, they won’t hear either of them.

Step 5. Pieces of a Bigger Campaign

Billboards can stand alone, but they’re generally more impactful when combined with a whole campaign. It’s a good idea to use them to reinforce ads given online, on TV, or through some other advertising medium.

Xbox once made a “Survival Billboard” to advertise a new video game, but it was part of a competition that was streamed online. Even though the sign itself wasn’t physically viewed by a ton of people, it was part of something bigger – and it worked.

Step 6. Get Creative

Once you know what your sign should say, you need to think of a clever way of communicating that. Don’t be afraid to outsource this part if you’re too close to it, but also don’t be afraid to keep it in-house if you have a great idea. It won’t be as noticeable if it looks like all signs advertising something similar, but if it does it in a unique way (like this anti-smoking billboard), people will really engage with it.

Step 7. Keep It Simple

One thing to remember about a billboard is that people usually see it as their going past (often while driving a car), so they only have a few seconds to take it all in. You should use as few words as possible (try to keep it under 6 or 7), and don’t put anything on it that’s unnecessary. Even your logo doesn’t need to be included every time.

Step 8. Avoid Gimmicks

It’s easy to create a silly billboard that people will notice, but it’s worthless if it isn’t your target audience talking about the message you want them to hear. Your design and message have to resonate with your audience.

Reebok recently made a running billboard that’s a good example of successfully using an unusual idea. It wasn’t just a gimmick because it appealed to the competitive nature of its target group, and it followed their new brand concept of pushing yourself to Be More Human.

Step 9. Think Outside the Sign

As technology and billboards are getting better, they don’t have to be just a sign. They can use technology to let people play along (like this McDonald’s video game) go to dramatic lengths to highlight a problem (like this mosquito billboard), or even help people out (like this sign that gave drivers a safe place to rest).

Step 10. Measure, Analyze, and Repeat

As with all marketing and advertising, you should measure the results and see how well it worked. For great billboard ideas, plan to continuously update your strategy to match your business goals, and don’t be afraid to reuse the successful elements of your campaigns.

What Makes a Good Billboard Design?

Okay, now that we’ve got the hardest part out of the way, we can actually focus on the design aspects of your billboard. Here are some other billboard design tips to consider to have your brand and message stand out:

Be Consistent

Whatever your message is, make sure you get your story straight. There should be brand guidelines that you follow for all billboards, ads, and creative you produce. Find your identity, find your story, find your voice, and keep that consistent.

Be Bold

The bigger, the better. Be loud. Remember, your audience is driving or engaged in something else, so the easier it is to read and understand your message, the more impactful it is. Don’t be shy, use actionable words like “do,” or “now.”

Be Simple

Your audience doesn’t have time for complicated messages or multiple calls to action. Be clear about what you want your audience to do and how to do it.

Be Authentic

Being genuine and “real” is the best approach. People can sense when you’re not speaking from the heart, so make sure you connect with rhetoric.
